Empathic Exercise

This exercise, facilitated by one of the Center's trainers, allows participants to experience what it is like to grow older. As part of the exercise, each person is furnished with a packet of items that will simulate the disabilities many people experience as they age. After donning these, the participants are asked to accomplish a series of everyday tasks, made more difficult, if not impossible, with the additional items they are wearing. The exercise also includes a true/false quiz to test the participants' knowledge of aging, an unfair hearing test, information about the aging process and a discussion about how the exercise made them feel.

It can be tailored to fit into specified time periods between 1 and 2 hours.

Provided for:

  • Groups of 10 - 50
  • College/high school classes
  • Health care providers
  • Case managers
  • Any group in the field of aging services

Cost:
$50 per session for groups up to 20
Training provided outside Tucson would incur travel expenses

The Center also provides detailed instructions for this exercise free of charge to individuals who would like to present this exercise to employees, classes, etc.

The Aging Game

This exercise, facilitated by one or more of the Center's trainers, allows participants to experience aging after 50 in terms of health, financial stability, independence and overall happiness. On the role of a die, participants can win, lose, play it safe or take chances with their finances, health and happiness. They can experience both the successes and difficulties that people encounter as they age. Much of this is dependent on good choices, but often, as in life, it is a matter of luck. Some participants will remain healthy, wealthy, independent and happy until the end of life, others will experience disability, dependence on others, poverty and unhappiness as they age. This is often a very powerful experience for participants because, unlike the empathic exercise, and more realistically, each participant will have a different experience of aging.

Provided for:

  • Groups of 10 - 50
  • College/high school classes
  • Health care providers
  • Case managers
  • Any group in the field of aging services.

Cost
$50 per session for groups up to 20
Training provided outside Tucson would incur travel expenses.
