Alzheimer's Disease: Pieces of the Puzzle
An Affordable Training Package of Five Videotapes & an
Instructor's Manual Offering Practical Knowledge and Skills for
Direct Service Staff

Audience: This training program has been used successfully with
nurse/home health aides, nurses, social workers, adult day care center aides, family caregivers, and adult care/foster home staff. The package includes an instructor's manual and five specially produced videotapes.

The Instructor's Manual

The easy-to-use instructor's manual includes the complete instructional content information, instructional guidelines, handouts and experiential exercises.

  1. An introduction to Alzheimer's disease, including effects on the brain, theories of causation, impact on behavior and stages of progression
  2. Selected commonly prescribed medications
  3. AND HOW TO:
    • Communicate effectively

The Video Tapes

The five specially produced videotapes cover the definition and effects of Alzheimer's Disease, communication, activities of daily living, problem behaviors and recreational activities. They creatively combine:

  • Footage of persons with Alzheimer's Disease
  • Narration
  • Dramatization
  • Animation
  • Visual effects

The videotapes are designed to be used as a part of a full workshop.

1) Introduction:
Increases understanding and empathy through cognitive information and a thought-provoking experiential segment.

  • Diagnostic criteria for dementia and Alzheimer's Disease
  • Key aspects of brain functioning and memory
  • The effects of Alzheimer's Disease on the brain, behavior and
    functioning.

2) A Practical Approach to Communication:
A poignant and fast-paced dramatization. Five aides discuss and portray effective communication techniques.

  • The power of nonverbal communication
  • Ways to better understand the communication of persons with
    dementia

3. A Practical Approach to Activities of Daily Living:
Combines footage of persons with Alzheimer's disease, caregiver
interviews and dramatization to portray effective approaches.

  • Six guidelines and four specific techniques for helping with activities of daily living
  • How to respond effectively to resistance

4. A Practical Approach to Problem Behaviors:
Explores effective responses to problem behaviors through footage of actual problem situations, narration and excerpts from a caregivers' workshop.

  • Basic causes of problem behaviors
  • Guidelines for coping with problem behaviors
  • How to use a problem solving approach

5. A Practical Approach to Recreational Activities:
An upbeat program centered around actual footage of staff assisting persons who have dementia. Presents a kaleidoscopic variety of activities.
