  Arizona Geriatric Education Center

Purpose: The Arizona Geriatric Education Center (AzGEC), located within the Arizona Center on Aging, University of Arizona, is one of a national network of 45 Geriatric Education Centers (GECs) funded by HRSA’s Bureau of Health Professions; Division of Associated, Dental, and Public Health Professions; Interdisciplinary, Geriatrics, and Allied Health Branch. GECs offer health professions educators, students and community practitioners opportunities to learn more about providing health care to older adults and their families.

Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementia Services Assessment

Purpose: The intent of this project is to conduct a statewide administrative review and assessment of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia services and capabilities in order to improve data collection, coordination, and service delivery of home and community based services to individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia, and their caregivers.

Arizona’s Older Ethnic Minorities 2000: A Demographic Analysis

Purpose: This 170 page is a compendium of demographic information about Arizona’s older ethnic minority population. Containing an executive summary and 9 chapters, the report is the most comprehensive document of its kind published for Arizona. Included are chapters on the composition, living arrangements, household and family structure, employment, social conditions, income, health status and service utilization of today's older Arizonans. Data from the 2000 Census are included as well as authoritative state and federal sources such as the Federal Interagency Forum on Aging Related Statistics 2000, Arizona Health and Vital Statistics Report 2000, and Arizona’s Community Based Settings Report (3rd Biennial) 2002.

Arizona’s Older Ethnic Minorities 2000: Population and Mortality Demographic Statistics

Purpose: This document is designed as a reference document that contains tables, maps and figures from the 2000 Census for counties and selected cities within your Arizona Area Agency on Aging Region (AAA). Census 2000 Summary Profiles of housing, economic, social and general demographics for the population all ages are presented for each county and selected cities. Also included are city maps illustrating the minority population age 65+ years by census tract. Arizona maps that show the leading causes of death as a percentage of all deaths among the older population by county are provided.

Camino de Amistad: Alzheimer’s CARE Program

Purpose: Arizona is one of 16 states to participate in the second phase of the Administration on Aging Alzheimer’s Disease Demonstration Grants to States. The purpose of this project is to evaluate the CARE program in cooperation with the Area Agency on Aging, Region One and the Arizona Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. The outcome evaluation will assess the effectiveness of the CARE program to provide culturally sensitive education, outreach and direct services to the underserved Hispanic population in outlying areas of Maricopa County.

Core training for Adult Protective Services

Cuidando con Confianza

Purpose: This evaluation project will assess a three year model caregiver support program being designed and implemented by the City of South Tucson in cooperation with COPE Behavioral Health Services.

Determination of Health Care Concerns among Elders Living near the Arizona-Mexico Border

Purpose: This study is designed to provide information regarding the health care concerns and needs of elder aged 55 years and older living along the Arizona-Mexico border.

Evaluation of the Health Improvement Program for the Elderly (HIPE)

Funding Source: Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS), DHHS.
Purpose: This study is being conducted to evaluate the HIPE program being implemented by Jewish Family and Children Services (JFCS). The HIPE program provides home based mental health and substance abuse counseling services for persons age 65 years and older, their caregivers and family members. Clinicians from three local counseling agencies (Catholic Social Services, Family Counseling Agency and JFCS) and the Marana Health Clinic are collaborating on the project. Program services have been designed to be culturally sensitive and relevant to encourage participation by older racial and ethnic minorities

A Model Training and Retention Program for Direct Caregivers

Purpose: The purpose of this project was to develop a curriculum on supervision of direct caregivers to be presented in two half-days.

Pathfinder: A Guide for Family Caregiving

Purpose: The preparation and production of 16 one-page fact sheets on a variety of topics to enhance caregivers ability to assist their elderly relatives in planning for their present and future care needs.

Profiling Arizona’s Nursing Home Residents
Co-Principal Investigator: Gerri Lamb, PhD, RN, FAAN, Kristine Bursac, MPA.
Funding Source: St Luke’s Health Initiatives.
Purpose: This study is analyzing state MDS data to profile Arizona’s nursing home residents from 1999 to 2001. The profile will describe and compare demographic characteristics and health conditions and identify salient trends across the three year project period. Based on study findings, priorities will be identified for quality improvement initiatives and outcomes research.
